A complete course in electronics for physics and engineering students

Linear circuits first: dc, transients, ac, Fourier methods, transmission lines and waveguides

Then the devices that make electronics useful: diodes, transistors, op-amps and more

Assumes only introductory physics and calculus — no previous electronics

Introduction to Modern Electronics

About the Book

One of the pleasures of teaching electronics is that few people doubt its importance and usefulness. This textbook grew out of a course taught in the Physics Department at the University of Wisconsin–Madison for juniors majoring in physics or engineering. It assumes a good introductory physics course and a course in calculus, but no previous knowledge of electronics. The more advanced mathematical techniques — differential equations, complex variables, and Fourier analysis — are explained where they are first encountered.

The book divides naturally into two parts. Chapters 1 to 5 give a careful treatment of linear circuits: direct-current circuits, capacitors and inductors and transient circuits, sinusoidal ac circuits and complex impedance, and Fourier methods and distributed circuits such as transmission lines and waveguides. Chapters 6 to 12 survey the important applications of nonlinear components, beginning with the diode and rectifier circuits.
