Swedish Music & Dance Weekend

October 24 ~ 26, 1997

Featuring Edwin's Spelmän, Leif Alpsjö, and Roo Lester

Edwin's Spelmän with Paul Dahlin, Bruce Johnson, Mary Londborg, Nancy Dahlin, and Marikay Dahlin proudly carries on the family tradition of "Grandpa" Edwin Johnson (1905 - 1984) who grew up fiddling in Dalarna. Paul directs the American Swedish Institute Spelmanslag in Minneapolis.

Leif Alpsjö teaches and plays the traditional music and dance of Uppland. Steeped in this region's traditions, he shares his deep understanding and knowledge with delightful warmth and humor.

In addition to working with Leif in his dance workshops, Roo Lester will offer a variety of Scandinavian dance basics, Polskor, and gammaldans variants. Roo's special basics session Friday is a great way to start the weekend.

Fiddle workshops will be offered at vaious levels; groupings will depend on numbers and experience of participants. Beginning fiddlers should be comfortable with some basic gammaldans repertoire. Tunes will be taught by ear; tape recorders are recommended. Leif will offer an early session for experienced fiddlers on Friday. Musicians registering by October 14 may order a learning tape (available around September 10). Compiled by Paul Dahlin and Leif Alpsjö for listening purposes prior to the workshops, the tape will include 9-12 tunes, many of which may be taught in the workshops.

Nyckelharpa workshops: Leif will decide how to schedule his workshop time once he knows how many have registered at what level of experience.

Dance workshops: Roo and Leif are both very skilled at assessing the level and needs of the group. In addition to working on individual dances, workshops will include work with rhythm, styling, "trallning" (oral fiddling), and cultural context.
